Discord PFP: make a square face avatar that survives the circle crop
Discord shows your profile picture as a tiny circle almost everywhere. A square face built for that crop stays recognizable in chats, the member list and voice channels — here is how to make one and set it, on desktop and mobile.
One face, three Discord views
The same design, exactly as Discord shows it: the square you upload, the circle it crops to, and the tiny size from the member list.

32px test passed, even in the member list
MEMBERS — 3
Your face, inside a Discord-style layout: chat, member list and server rail — readable at a glance.
Square — what you upload
512 × 512 PNG, exported from the generator.
Circle — what Discord shows
The corners are cut. Keep the face centered with room around it.
Tiny — member list size
About 32 pixels. Bold eyes and a clear mouth still read.
Check both previews before you export: the editor has a circle preview and a 32px test built in.
Make your Discord PFP in 3 steps
About two minutes, free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.
Design your face
Open the generator and pick skin, hair, eyes and accessories across 12 categories, then tune the colors. Stuck for ideas? Start from a gallery design and remix it.
Check the circle preview
Switch the preview to Circle to see the Discord crop, then to the 32px test. If pigtails, hats or glasses get cut off, pull the design inward or simplify it.
Export 512 × 512 PNG
Choose 512 × 512 PNG in the export menu and download. Transparent background shows Discord’s theme behind your face; a solid or gradient background pops on any theme.
How to change your Discord profile picture
Desktop first, then mobile. The steps are the same on every account.
On desktop
Open User Settings
Click the gear icon next to your username at the bottom left of the Discord window.
Go to Profiles
Click Profiles in the left menu, then click Change Avatar — or click your current avatar picture.
Choose your PNG
Pick the 512 × 512 PNG you exported, adjust the crop if Discord offers a slider, then click Apply and Save Changes.
On mobile
Open your profile
Tap your profile picture in the bottom bar of the Discord app.
Edit your profile
Tap Edit Profile, then tap your avatar picture.
Choose your PNG
Choose Change Avatar, pick the PNG from your photos, adjust the crop, and save. If the old picture still shows, restart the app — avatars are cached for a few minutes.
Animated GIF avatars and a different avatar per server both need a Nitro subscription. Without Nitro, a PNG or JPG shows as one still avatar everywhere.
Circle-crop rules that keep faces readable
Discord cuts the corners off every avatar. Designs built with margin survive; designs built edge-to-edge lose hats, hair and glasses.
✓ Do: leave margin
The whole face sits inside the circle with room to spare. Hair, cheeks and clothes all survive the crop.
✗ Don’t: zoom to the edges
Zoomed-in faces lose hair and sides in the circle crop and turn into a blur at small sizes.
- Center the face. Eyes and mouth near the middle of the square read best in a circle.
- Keep hats and pigtails inside. Wide extras near the corners get clipped — check the circle preview.
- Go bold, not busy. Big eyes, a clear mouth and one accent color beat ten tiny details at 32 pixels.
- Skip text in the picture. Letters turn unreadable at avatar sizes and get cropped at the corners.
- Test both themes. A transparent background shows Discord’s dark or light theme behind your face — check it on both.
Discord avatar sizes, explained
One upload covers every spot. The numbers below are about how big Discord displays your avatar, not what you must upload.
| Where it shows | Display size | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Chat messages | About 40 px | Keep eyes and mouth bold and centered. |
| Member list | About 32 px | Simplify accessories — use the editor’s 32px test. |
| Profile popout | About 128 px | Details show here, but the design must still read at 32 px. |
| Upload file | 512 × 512 PNG | Sharp everywhere without a heavy file. 1024 px also works. |
Every platform has its own sizes — see the full avatar size guide for X, TikTok, YouTube and more.
Matching PFPs for friends and servers
One design language, many faces. Build a set that matches without being identical.
Start from one preset or one gallery design, then change only the hair color and one accessory per person. The faces read as a set in a member list while everyone stays recognizable. Save each version in one of the editor’s 6 save slots, or copy a share link for each design and send it to the group — anyone opening the link gets the exact face loaded and can tweak it. More pairing ideas live on the ideas page.
Discord PFP questions
What size should a Discord PFP be?
Export a 512 × 512 pixel PNG. It stays sharp on desktop profiles and small enough to upload instantly, and it still reads well when Discord shrinks it to about 32 pixels in the member list.
How do I change my Discord PFP on mobile?
Tap your profile picture in the bottom bar of the Discord app, tap Edit Profile, tap your avatar, choose Change Avatar, pick your PNG, adjust the crop, and save.
Why is my Discord PFP blurry?
Blur usually comes from uploading a small image or a screenshot. Export a fresh 512 or 1024 pixel PNG from the generator instead of screenshotting the preview.
Can I use an animated Discord PFP?
Animated avatars using GIF files need a Discord Nitro subscription. Without Nitro, upload a PNG or JPG and it will show as a still image.
Can I have a different PFP on each Discord server?
Yes, with a Discord Nitro subscription you can set a per-server avatar from the server profile settings. Without Nitro, one avatar shows on every server.
Can I use a gallery design as my Discord PFP?
Yes. Open the gallery, tap Remix on any design, adjust it if you like, export a 512 pixel PNG, and upload it as your Discord avatar.
