Avatar sizes: the right profile picture size for every platform
One square face, uploaded once, sharp everywhere. Here is how big each platform shows your avatar — and which export to pick so it never looks blurry.
One upload, every size
The same face, from 128 px to 24 px
Platforms shrink your upload to fit each spot. If the face still reads at the smallest size, it works everywhere.
Faces shown at true size, on display discs. Test your own design with the editor’s 32px preview before you export.
Sizes by platform
Where your face shows, and how big
Each face is drawn at about the size that platform shows it. Upload sizes are our recommendation for a sharp result.
Discord
~40 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Chat size. Profiles show bigger, member lists smaller — one upload covers all three.
TikTok
~100 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Round profile photo. Bold eyes and a clear mouth read best at this size.
~150 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Circle crop on your profile. Keep hats and wide hair inside the circle.
YouTube
~98 px
Upload 1024 × 1024 PNG
Channel icons show small next to every video — export the largest size here.
X
~130 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Round avatar on your profile and next to every post. High contrast wins.
Twitch
~150 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Shows beside your stream and in chat. A solid background pops on dark pages.
~170 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Round on desktop, smaller on mobile. One sharp upload serves both.
~140 px
Upload 512 × 512 PNG
Circle crop in chats and calls. Center the face and skip corner details.
Display sizes are approximate — platforms resize, crop and re-compress uploads, and sizes change over time. Uploading 512 px or larger keeps every version sharp.
Which export?
Pick your pixels once
Three PNG sizes and WebP. Bigger is not always better — pick by where the face will live.
256 px
Small and fast. Fine for chat stickers and tiny icons where nobody zooms in.
512 px
The all-rounder. Sharp on every platform in the list above, light enough to upload anywhere.
1024 px
Maximum detail. Best for YouTube icons, printing, and anywhere the face gets enlarged.
WebP gives the same look in a smaller file — pick it for websites and fast loading. For avatars, PNG is the safest choice everywhere.
Square in, circle out
Every platform crops a circle
You upload a square. The platform shows a circle. Design for the circle and nothing gets cut off.
Square — what you upload
512 × 512 PNG, exported from the generator.
Circle — what platforms show
The corners are cut. Keep the face centered with room around it.
Tiny — smallest display
About 24–32 pixels. Bold features still read.
The full circle-crop rules live on the Discord PFP guide — they apply to every platform here.
Avatar size questions
What is the best size for a profile picture?
A 512 × 512 pixel PNG covers almost every platform, from Discord chats to Instagram profiles. For YouTube channel icons, export at 1024 pixels for extra sharpness.
What happens if I upload a small avatar?
Platforms stretch small images to fill the display size, which makes them look blurry. Export a fresh 512 or 1024 pixel PNG from the generator instead of uploading a screenshot.
Do avatars have to be square?
Uploads are square, and most platforms crop them into a circle. Keep the face centered with room around it so nothing important gets cut off.
PNG or JPG for avatars?
PNG is the better choice for illustrated avatars: it stays crisp and supports transparent backgrounds. JPG is fine for photographs, but it can soften sharp edges.
Why does my avatar look blurry on one platform but fine on another?
Each platform shows avatars at different sizes and re-compresses uploads. A 512 pixel PNG stays sharp on most, but a small upload or a screenshot will look soft wherever it gets enlarged.
Can I use the same avatar on every platform?
Yes. One 512 pixel square face works on Discord, TikTok, Instagram, X, Twitch, Facebook and WhatsApp. Check the circle preview before you export so it reads well everywhere.
